Residential Painting Company strategy

If you are just starting out in the painting business, one of the first things you'll have to master is the art of bidding for a residential painting job. If you are in a competitive market, this will be even more difficult and if you operate in a smaller town, you will typically not be able to charge as much for jobs as companies in larger cities can. However, with practice, and by keeping a few simple rules in mind, you can create a competitive bid to paint a residential house.

Step 1

Compute the surface area of the the exterior or interior walls that the client wants painted to determine how much paint and primer you will need to complete the job. Multiply the height of each wall by its width and add up the results to get the total square feet of surface to be painted. On average, it takes a gallon of paint to cover 400 square feet.

Step 2

Discuss color options with the client. Certain variables like elaborate trim work and more expensive paint brands can affect the cost of your bid. Discuss the work that needs to be done and whether the client needs any extras completed with the job.

Step 3

Figure out how many people it will take to finish the job and how long it will take them. Once you have an idea of how large the job is, you can estimate how many employees you will need and how long it will take them. Do not be overly optimistic with your estimate. Always add on an extra day or two to account for poor weather conditions, sick employees or unexpected problems.

Step 4

Combine your actual costs. Take the amount for the paint and any supplies, and the amount for your labor costs and add this figure together. This is what it will actually cost you to complete the job. It's a good idea to add on an additional 5 to 10 percent to cover unanticipated challenges.

Step 5

Determine your profit margin. Add to your last total how much profit you want to make from the job. If you are a new company without a proven reputation, it is best to keep this number small - under 10 percent. You now have the total bid to present to your client for the job.

Is there a company that inspects residential paint for quality coverage?

I'm looking for an impartial non painting company to give a non biased opinion on the interior and exterior painted surfaces of a home.

Then you should probably consider hiring a home inspector. Like the one you use when you purchase or sell a home. They may not be an expert on paint but a good one is generally pretty knowledgeable about the condition of your home.
